Getting a coach

The snowboarding lessons got me thinking. I advanced a lot by getting a coach. What other areas of my life could I improve with a coach?

The format I’ve been following, where I’ve had success has been:

have a private lesson, then go away and practice, then come back for feedback.

The format I’ve been following for mediocrity or no success is either:

read about it in a book. Then forget it while I read the next ten books.

Or

Keep doing the same thing again and again without getting any feedback.

For example, for my Spanish, I’ve been progressing a lot more since I took a tutor. Sometimes I feel a little frustrated that I’m not learning fast enough, but in general I’m pretty happy with my progress.

The same thing from snowboarding, it has been a dream for many years for me now finally I’ve learned to do it and I’ve got enough ability now to go away on my own and improve.

Examples of mediocrity are the gym. I’ve been going since I was 18, but never took a coach and don’t get advice. So I do mostly the same workouts without much improvement (I have improved obviously but no where near as much as I should have for the years I’ve put in). I put that down to 2 things. One, not going consistently enough even though I go 2 to 3 times a week, they’re quite rushed sessions in my lunch time so maybe I can’t dedicate as much time as I need to in order to really see the results I could be making. But that leads onto number 2, if I’m not making the progress I think I should be making, is it because I don’t really know how to correct what I’m doing and so maybe I need a coach?

Another example is business. I’ve read SO many books. And I’m no closer to launching a business now than when I read Rich Dad Poor Dad back in the early 2000s. I put this down to inaction, and lack of feedback and accountability. Things a coach is there to provide.

I’ve been thinking recently about getting a life coach. If I have someone who is able to monitor how I operate, how I think and can give me good feedback, that could be the thing I need to advance massively in all areas of my life.

I think the things stopping me now are the cost and carving out the time. But I’m pretty sure, if I get a good coach, all the things I’m aiming for and documenting in this blog will be more attainable.
